Although it is the second most popular oxygen transport protein in nature, in its native state (in solution) it is an unlikely candidate for soft X-ray spectroscopy. Recent advances in the experimental equipment of third-generation light sources finally allow direct access to the electronic structure at the L-edge of transition metal proteins like hemocyanin.
